Fifteen-year-old Illya Oslov holds the answer to the survival of his village in his hand, but he could be banished if he tells anyone about it.
Generations after a pandemic illness known as The Calamity wiped out the world of the Olders, people live as hunter-gatherers. Illya's people live on the edge of starvation, never knowing if this winter will be their last. When he finds an ancient copy of The Old Farmer's Almanac, Illya knows planting can save them. But, powerful people in the village fear the Olders and everything they left behind. No one wants to be cursed and bring on the next Calamity. Illya's fascination with the Olders' world already has some of them thinking that he could be to blame for all of their troubles.
