Believing her to be dead, Hagrid left her in the house for the Muggles to handle, along with the corpses of James and Lily. Then the police officer found her and realized she was alive, unlike her parents. She was sent to live in an orphanage, which she ran away from after being blamed for something she couldn't have done. She lived on the streets for seven years before coming across the castle.
