"We have the same face. Isn't that enough?" Three years ago, I made a promise to God: If I ever escaped the sandwich-generation grind, I'd spend the rest of my life helping people who were still trapped in it. Three years later, I left a flyer at a small café. One person responded. She had my face. Same eyes. Same features. Even the same exhausted look I'd seen in the mirror for years. Strangers thought we were siblings. My own mother thought I'd somehow found a long-lost relative. I told myself it was a coincidence. I told myself it didn't mean anything. I told myself a lot of things. Then, one year later- She's my wife. She has my face, my heart, and apparently a personal file on everyone who's ever gotten too close to me. "Your ex-girlfriend came back. Why? What does she want?" "I don't like the way she looks at you." "Promise me you'll never leave me." "Promise me." "Promise me." She checks my phone. She researches every new person I try to help. She knows my schedule better than I do. She calls it love. I'm starting to think it's fear. And the strangest part? Neither of us knows why we have the same face. Maybe it's coincidence. Maybe there's an explanation. Or maybe we'll never find out. Because the real question isn't why we look alike. It's whether I can convince her that the face she's terrified of losing... is the same face she sees in the mirror every morning. This is the story of two strangers with the same face, the same debt, and the same fear- and the slow, messy, sometimes terrifying realization that neither of them was ever meant to survive alone.
