Ice hauler Canterbury ship receives a distress signal from another ship, acting Executive Officer Jim Holden is ordered to lead a rescue mission with the ship's engineer Naomi Nagata, the mechanic Amos Burton, the pilot Alex Kamal, the weapon specialist Lila Frost and the medic Shed Garvey. Two hundred years in the future, humanity has colonised the solar system. Ships are blowing each other to pieces, Venus is changing in ways no one can understand, and something killed two full squads of marines on the icy surface of Ganymede.
