It's really a beautiful young lady named Hannah who wears men's clothing to protect herself from the mean men in the mining camp where she lives. But who beat and whipped her? The story follows Adam Cartwright and his younger brother Little Joe as they embark on a journey to Virginia City during a fierce blizzard. Little Joe becomes increasingly ill during the journey, and Adam struggles to keep him warm and conscious. As they make their way through the blizzard, they become lost and stumble upon a cabin where they are taken hostage by a group of outlaws led by a man named Jack. Adam is determined to protect Little Joe and keep him safe, even as they are held captive. The story highlights the strength of the bond between the two brothers and the lengths that Adam will go to take care of Little Joe.

Maggie is the youngest of the Cartwright family. She never remembered her mother, and they never ever talked about her. Maggie, who just turned 13 is close to all her brothers, but closest to Joe, mainly because she always thought his mother was her mother also.
