He was rarely around for his family before the apocalypse occurred. The day the apocalypse started, his father died of cancer. Him and his brother, David, got in a fight because Javi failed to make it home in time to say goodbye. His father reanimated as a walker shortly after his passing and bit Javi's mother in the cheek. David took their mom to the hospital, which resulted in Javi not seeing him again for years to come.
