Ashton Stanton has lived in the small country town of Bolton for her entire life. She is known across town as the Mayor of Bolton's daughter and she has been perfectly content living up to her family's high expectations, until her brother and best friend Tommy becomes one of five students killed in a shooting at Bolton High School. Ashton struggles with the reality of her brother's death and her perfect family façade slowly begins to unravel as they all break under the weight of grief that follows in the wake of Tommy's death. Feeling lost and alone Ashton finds herself spiralling down into a dark abyss of despair and the unlikely association of a young boy named Wesley Martin is the last thing that she ever imagined would help her get through these hard times. Wesley lives across town on the other side of the tracks and he is everything that Ashton's Father dissuades her to associate with, but the more time Ashton spends with Wesley, the easier Tommy's death becomes to bare. He offers her a shoulder to lean on and she learns that it is okay to feel and to grieve because emotions are what make us all human. Determined to stand up to her Father and make a difference in Bolton, Ashton works to rally the people of her small town together and urges them to unite, despite their differences, in order to ensure that no other young lives at Bolton High School are ever lost at the hands of a student with a gun.

I penned this short story as a middle finger to any moron who believes 'guns don't kill people; people do' (that includes you, Mr President). Guns are lethal weapons and there are far too many liabilities in this world to be dishing out lethal weapons willy-nilly, be it the antics of a curious child, a deluded lunatic or a simple moment of rage. The idea for this story was inspired by the single line 'That's not the way God wanted it' from Stephen King's short story Premium Harmony, so thanks to Mr King.

It's a cold winter. The Murderer comes out to play. Stealing lives, ripping families apart but the only thing that is guaranteed, is that lives will be lost.
