When a secretive but routine mission goes catastrophically wrong, its singular survivor is tasked with picking up meaningless fragments in the aftermath. With nothing to recover and no one to save, he is left to make sense of the intangible and find a new purpose. Of Engineers, Humans, monsters and the gears of fate. This story follows the events of another of mine, Those Whom Fortune Favours, from the Last Engineer's perspective.

Amidst the neon glow of blue and purple, under the dense canopy of steel, at the forefront of the data deluge, lies the world post-technological revolution-also the boundary between reality and illusion. Steel and flesh, past and future. Here, the outer world and the inner world coexist, with everything in front of us almost as if the wall of time is within reach. Darkness gradually envelops. But understand, my friend, we cannot confront darkness with gentleness; we must use fire.

Charles Goodyear developed vulcanization in 1840 and by 2017 the world produced 28 million tons of rubber; more than half of which was synthetic. WHO THE HELL ARE WE? is a series of short books and videos describing the evolution of civilization. Almost everyone on the planet is five times wealthier than their ancestors only 50 years ago.
