Can a heritage of savagery and a heart of sincerity coexist? The Origin. A race of beings who possess inhuman abilities and dwell in a society built upon strength and domination. For centuries, the strongest would rule and the weak were to obey. Though barbaric at first sight, this well established system maintained an era of peace among their kind. However... Somewhere down the line, a new leader arose. With his faction, he toppled the powers that be and founded his own governmental system. One based on corruption, caste systems and classism. Through usurped riches, he amassed great manpower and obedience. Thus the strong were cast into the depths of the slums, destined to serve the weak in a subjugation cloaked as 'law and order'. Until... One man from amongst the outcasts asked a single question... "Why do the strong serve the weak?" That man was... Dharun Tarheen!

Troitsky is a toxic bachelor-but dangerously charming. Kira is a single mother who still believes in love. Their lives, and those around them, collide in a tangled search for happiness. This isn't the age of Tolstoy and Dostoevsky. Now it's dating apps, chatbots, and pistachio lattes. But the big questions remain: Who am I? Why am I here? And where do I find happiness? A witty, heartfelt modern story with a sharp, lingering aftertaste.

Siddhartha is a novel by Hermann Hesse that deals with the spiritual journey of self-discovery of a man named Siddhartha during the time of the Gautama Buddha. The book, Hesse's ninth novel, was written in German, in a simple, lyrical style. It was published in the U.S. in 1951 and became influential during the 1960s. Hesse dedicated the first part of it to Romain Rolland and the second to Wilhelm Gundert, his cousin. The word Siddhartha is made up of two words in Sanskrit language, siddha (achieved) + artha (what was searched for), which together means "he who has found meaning (of existence)" or "he who has attained his goals". In fact, the Buddha's own name, before his renunciation, was Siddhartha Gautama, Prince of Kapilavastu. In this book, the Buddha is referred to as "Gotama". Cover by: @Sapphire_2721

NORP - Normal, Ordinary, Responsible, Person NAT - Necessary Action Taken Grant 'Norp' Wealleyn comes from an all-White family full of doctors. They think his perfect partner should be a prestigious doctor and anything else just doesn't fit into the plan. Nathalie 'Nat' Williams comes from an all-Black family full of cops. They hoped she would someday marry someone in law enforcement and it was something her father always envisioned. Grant's mother is incredibly stubborn and Nathalie's father is as equally stubborn. Both parental figures are more alike than they'd like to admit. They might've overlooked the color difference, had their children chosen what they deemed to be an equal-class partner. Their relationship has to survive through classism, racism and all the bigotry their families decide to hurl at them. How far will their families go? And when will it be enough? For the OpenNovellaContest II. First time trying Drama-Romance, rather than skirting about in the edges. It's my first romantically focused story, but I still hope the focus on the issues remain pertinent. Here's hoping it's not a complete and endless stream of twaddle! *Because of a comment and after some deliberation, I thought it best to write this in the description to avoid any future confusion. This story is written in the technique of 'multiple internal focalisation', switching between Grant and Nathalie at times-two separate POVs-with the separate constant narrator. Hopefully, this clarifies any future questions about that after the first few chapters.

My life began at the beginning of the end, for my planet. No, not some far distant entity that NASA has not discovered yet. Yes, I am talking about Earth, why is it at the beginning of the end for my planet? Global warming? NO! Nuclear War? NO! The wide-spread popularity of Reality TV? Wow, I'm actually offended! The birth of me? OBVIOUSLY! Elliot Veal (AKA Doctor Nihilistical) is a super-villain, well a struggling one that is. He is running around trying to determine whether or not his arch-nemesis will actually pay enough attention to him to actually try and thwart all of his evil plans. His goal in life: to rule the world, obviously. Bleddyn Bird (AKA the mysterious Erebus) is a super-hero, also struggling. While Doctor Nihilistical is running around, Bleddyn is trying to get through graduate school and is barely able to function with the amount of sleep he is getting each night. Both are trying to figure out what they need to do in order to survive, and it's getting to the point where they can't get out of each others' heads long enough to realize what is actually important in life.

"Ligeia" is an early short story by American writer Edgar Allan Poe, first published in 1838. The story follows an unnamed narrator and his wife Ligeia, a beautiful and intelligent raven-haired woman. She falls ill, composes "The Conqueror Worm", and quotes lines attributed to Joseph Glanvill (which suggest that life is sustainable only through willpower) shortly before dying. After her death, the narrator marries the Lady Rowena. Rowena becomes ill and she dies as well. The distraught narrator stays with her body overnight and watches as Rowena slowly comes back from the dead - though she has transformed into Ligeia. The story may be the narrator's opium-induced hallucination and there is debate whether the story was a satire. Cover by the lovely @theynotgone

"The Pit and the Pendulum" is a short story written by Edgar Allan Poe and first published in 1842 in the literary annual The Gift: A Christmas and New Year's Present for 1843. The story is about the torments endured by a prisoner of the Spanish Inquisition, though Poe skews historical facts. The narrator of the story describes his experience of being tortured. The story is especially effective at inspiring fear in the reader because of its heavy focus on the senses, such as sound, emphasizing its reality, unlike many of Poe's stories which are aided by the supernatural. The traditional elements established in popular horror tales at the time are followed, but critical reception has been mixed. Cover by the lovely @KatrinHollister
