Haven Sam doesn't let people in. She likes to be alone and keep to herself, especially after sophomore year at SHA when almost she ruined it all in her mind. After coming to such a prestigeous school, she is just average, even with her sport. Her grades slipped. Her coach doesn't like her. She was so caught up with so much stress that it cost her more. The only person who knows anything is wrong is Cornell Sims, her best friend. She is determined that she can get through this and for no one to know her secret, even Cornell. All Haven will do this year is ball off and maybe that will be enough to hide everything else. She wasn't looking for anymore distractions for junior year when a pair of gray eyes and a confident grin caught her off guard. Anastacia Hunter is a new junior to Silver Hill Academy recruited for hockey. She is bubbly and electric on the ice. She is here to get recruited to play D1, but she meets a familiar familiar face that she used to watch from afar when going to AAU games for Stacia's older sister, Hally, in middle school. She remembers watching this girl dominate basketball in CT, but all the talk of this child prodigy somehow became quiet when the grape vine (her sister) said that she went to boarding school. Now that she is here, Stacia is determined to succeed here at SHA and maybe befriend this mysterious, yet intriguing girl. Even if her mind knows that befriending might take a back seat when this sarcastically brooding girl gets close.

This is a collection of quirky, tragic, serious, intimate, scary, and humorous flashfic all written with the goal of less-is-more! So take five minutes, relax and read a story, because the dishes can wait, the lawn isn't going anywhere, and if you're working from home, your boss will never know. Most of these stories were written in conjunction with the weekly prompt used in the Weekendwritein WP group. The story prompt is indicated in parenthesis with a hashtag. Additional flashfic outside of this collection is published on my WP profile. Cover photo: "Carrots" by Bob Shepard (Flickr) https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by/2.0/legalcode

The world is loud. There are those who make no sound. Billions of people on the planet, some make no sound, some hear no sounds, and some don't see what's making the sound. Humans take their voice for granted, they don't realize what it's like not to be able to say what you're thinking. Humans don't realize what it's like not to be able to listen to the world. They don't realize what it's like not to be able to look at the stars and see the beauty in the sky. I can see, I can hear, but what I can't do is speak for myself. My own silence is deafening. *Pardon my word choice.* I've never been able to speak, as soon as I was able I was sent to learn ASL (American Sign Language). I was then sent to regular public school and I love it, the sounds of the students talking. Being able to be a regular person, well, as close to regular as I can be without talking. My name is Rosalyn, I've never breathed a word. Silence is easy when all you can give are ASL signs and not many people understand them. I'm just like everyone else. I have a celebrity crush. I have a favorite book (It's Lock and Key by Sarah Dessen). I have a favorite color (It's a silvery blue). I have a story to tell just like you. I get made fun of because I can't speak. People yell at me thinking that because I'm mute I'm also deaf. This is my silent melody, the song of my soul.
