Alma ha 26 anni, una misera borsa di studio per un dottorato massacrante e tendenze fortemente depressive. La sua vita non è delle migliori a causa di amicizie sbagliate e amori non corrisposti ma, nonostante tutto, è sopravvissuta a ogni evento. Le cose, però, sono destinate a precipitare quando al numero 91 di Calle del Marqués de Alboraya, nell'appartamento in cui vive con altri due coinquilini, non arriva il quarto: rumoroso, arrogante e menefreghista, Julio sembra non vedere l'ora di rendere la vita di Alma un inferno, portandosi a casa ragazze, sporcando come un maiale e, soprattutto, non lasciandola dormire di notte. Così Alma inizia a delirare. Una notte, disperata, se ne va su un bus, con il pensiero fisso di gettarsi da un ponte e farla finita. È proprio su quell'autobus notturno che incontra un uomo misterioso che afferma di essere la sua Cattiva Coscienza e di essere accorso in suo aiuto prima che fosse troppo tardi. Él, come chiede di essere chiamato, convince Alma che il suicidio non è l'unica opzione. Che non devono essere sempre le vittime a pagare. Che, con un poco di iniziativa, la vendetta può essere servita, calda e deliziosa, come un pasticcio di trota al forno.
