The Abnormal Journal of Jane John
ChristineMBrowne
~~DESCRIPTION~~
Jane John is not normal; she is listless, a wallflower, unimportant and most of all she finds it hard to forgive. This is what Jane believes of herself. In spite of all of her surrounding problems and self-inflicted ones, Jane is sure of one thing- that for the most part she can't be bothered with it all.
This is a lie.
Jane is an adopted fourteen year old with an independent, eccentric mother and a brooding father- a local judge- who sees her as violent, secretive and disappointing. That is when he sees her and not through her.
After her adopted father Samuel sends Jane to a therapist for her "abnormalities" she is asked to keep a journal in order to document her day to day feeling- feelings that she thinks she doesn't even possess.
If her home life around Samuel was bad, school was an even worse affair. Jane is ignored by almost everyone save a timid, bespectacled boy named Ian Cuthbert(her only friend) and a fifteen year old who she despises (if she felt)- Bryce Brawler. Bryce Brawler, whom she "affectionately" calls "Brawler," "Brute," "Thug" or "Beast," is a bully with a confusing way of dealing with awkward situations. Jane knows a lot about Bryce Brawler on the surface but little about what he's really thinking and why he brings out reactions from her that no one else does and this pits her against him even more.
However, as things within her grow progressively worse and more pessimistic, Jane discovers that she has an unbelievable and intriguing supernatural ability that to her dismay is discovered by her enemy Bryce. The ability turns out for Jane and Bryce to be both a distraction and an avenue for change (should they choose to).
Jane soon discovers that what she can do may be connected to the truth about her birth parents and may give her opportunities to forgive.
*The entire short story takes the form of dated journal entries written in the first person by Jane- some much longer than others.
