In the Empire of the Four Oaks, every cat is born with a place chosen by the branches they were borne under. Rose, Briar, and Rowan were born in the same litter, raised beneath the same roof, and taught the same prayers to the First Oak: but when they come of age, the Empire diverges their path according to the ancient laws and traditions tied to their natural destiny.
Rose is beautiful, graceful, and promising, everything a young molly ought to be,
Briar is - under experiences eyes - lacking in the beauty expected of such a reputable family,
Rowan, youngest but boldest of the litter, only grows more aware of the expectations that surround his heritage. . .
For years, they have believed that the Ancient Oak knows best. But war has a way of exposing roots.
As Rowan witnesses the cost of the Empire's decisions, Briar begins to question the very system that cast her aside, and Rose discovers that privilege can be another kind of cage, the three siblings find themselves asking questions no one in the Empire is supposed to ask.
What happens when three cats who were raised to accept their places begin to imagine choosing their own?
