The Hundred Year War may be over, but peace has never meant the absence of battles.
Lady Kaida, cousin to Fire Lord Zuko, has spent most of her life hiding just how dangerous-and compassionate-she truly is. A master firebender, political envoy, engineer, educator, and former spy, Kaida survived an abusive childhood and secretly fought against the Fire Nation from within long before Ozai fell. Now she dedicates herself to rebuilding her nation, reforming its education system, protecting nonbenders, and uncovering the war crimes powerful men would rather leave buried.
Then she meets Sokka.
Older, stronger, and long past needing bending to prove his worth, Sokka has grown into a brilliant strategist, inventor, warrior, and diplomat. Kaida expects to respect his mind. She does not expect him to understand hers so completely-or to become the one person around whom she no longer feels required to be perfect.
What begins with infrastructure debates and engineering plans slowly becomes late-night conversations, shared meals, quiet touches, jealousy, danger, and the terrifying realization that home may no longer be a place for either of them.
But while Kaida and Sokka build something neither expected, an underground network connected to some of the Fire Nation's darkest wartime experiments begins resurfacing. Their investigation will uncover hidden laboratories, assassins, stolen children, and secrets that refuse to remain buried.
Together with Team Avatar, they must confront the legacy of the war while deciding what kind of future they want to create from its ashes.
A mature post-war Sokka romance about healing, found family, political reform, espionage, parenthood, engineering as a love language, and two people discovering that love does not have to be earned.
Sometimes the strongest thing a dragon can do is finally let someone stand beside her.
