In December 2013, I traveled to Nepal's Mt. Everest on assignment for the BBC. It was the 60th anniversary of the first summit by Sir Edmund Hillary and Tenzing Norgay. In that time there's been hundreds of thousands of tourists who have turned the mountain from a picturesque natural wonder to the world's most challenging, and highest, ecological crisis. Trash is a problem, and I was traveling to document the human footprint in the Everest region. I spent two weeks in the Himalayas on the way up to Everest Base Camp at more than 18,000 feet, and a month in-country. Along the way I dealt with extreme weather, physical pain, and significantly low oxygen levels. People I trekked with were medically evacuated. Those that made it pushed their bodies and minds to the limits and experienced a special camaraderie and sense of accomplishment. My story was selected as part of the Twitter Fiction Festival, which is co-sponsored by Penguin Random House, the Association of American Publishers, and USA Today. "High Altitude" will told be in tweets during the festival from March 12-16. Defending Eve is wholeheartedly inspired with love by true events and is not meant as a self-help book. Rather it is a genuine and heartfelt story that leaves the reader with many valuable lessons intended to better all relationships. It is also unique because such a tender story has its source from the acrimony of a break up. Ironically, it is only through such a stormy environment that the light is able to shine through. You’ll find a divorce lawyer’s secrets to keeping love, not ending it, wrapped in a new package—the fictional story of Adam, a young man coming of age and discovering the secrets of lasting relationships through his experiences with women. Adam shares the childhood experiences that shape his view of women and what they deserve in a relationship. Our leading man then candidly shares his struggles to press toward his goals of being successful in the world of work and relationships. Along the way his love stories carry you into the world of a man’s yearning for the romance he fears may only be found in romance books. You’ll feel with him the ecstasy and uncertainty of first love. You feel his frustration and resignation as it flounders, and then ends. You’ll share his search for his romantic ideal. You’ll see his best intentions misunderstood. You’ll discover as he did just how powerful an aphrodisiac the imagination can be. You’ll feel his frustration as he finds himself passionately in love, yet pushing the woman he loves away. Adam’s struggles become the canvas upon which Jaffe shares the secrets of lasting relationships.

Cli·ché: a phrase or opinion that is overused and betrays a lack of original thought. Meet Pepper Ballard. Independent, single, and sarcastic as hell. Pepper fights her own battles with pride and is officially #done with clichés. Unshaven werewolves, pale vampires, flawless and talented female vampire hunters who instantly fall in love with the enemy even though they want to kill the hunter's entire family... Please, give her a break. The more Pepper tries to avoid these nauseating clichés and destroy them, the further she is dragged into a dark, supernatural world that is her own virtual worst nightmare. Wayward: Fetching Tales from a Year on the Road is a hilarious and heartfelt ride around the world, wherein the author eats dog, obsesses about chewing gum, gets stranded on an island, does dirty things, reveres rock n roll and muses about everything from death to Star Trek to the President Obama to jail time. Now available on Wattpad, Wayward has been a surprise hit at both iTunes and Amazon, reaching #1 on both retailers' travel charts. It chronicles a year in the life of the author, who lived in 12 countries over 12 months, one month at a time. It's kind of funny, kind of sad and kind of weird. Forbes describes the book: "Wayward isn’t strictly a travelogue or a guide by any means. The book reads like a diary, with chapters dedicated to everything from watching Obama’s inauguration in an Argentinian bar, to viewing a dubbed version of the newest Star Trek film in France and trying to understand the plot despite not speaking French, to remembering the ecstasy and pain of his first love just before breaking up with his then-boyfriend in Berlin, to eating dog in Vietnam, to his experience working with Patti Smith in New York. Gates’ lively, conversational writing style bring all the disparate pieces together for an engaging, enjoyable read."
