Six months in New York was supposed to be the beginning.
At twenty, Lizzy Grant left Lake Placid behind, chasing a music career she isn't even sure will happen. She's broke, restless, reckless, and slowly becoming someone her family wouldn't recognise - trading innocence for dimly lit bars, vintage records and a new name that feels like a wish rather than an identity.
But eventually? She's due a visit home.
Her seventeen-year-old brother still remembers every version of the menace she used to be. Her father still sees her as the girl who snuck out at night.
And then there's Frank Castle.
Her father's best friend. A former solider. A man who has spent years being the person her family could rely on when everything went wrong.
He was the one who picked up the pieces when she went too far, driving her home when she had nowhere else to go, and telling her father only what absolutely needed to be said. From when she was only scraped knees, bad decisions, and late night troubles.
To him, she's always been Lizzy.
That was, until she walked through the door six months later.
She's still the same stubborn, reckless girl beneath it all. But the city has sharpened her. She's more confident, more complicated, carrying an entirely different darkness.
He hates that he notices.
Because Frank Castle is guarded by nature. A man that knows some lines exist for a reason. He's not interested in complicating feelings, especially when those feelings involve his best friend's daughter.
What begins as nothing more than familiar arguments, stolen glances, and comments that linger a few seconds too long slowly becomes something neither of them are prepared to name.
Frank is supposed to be familiar. Off limits.
But he finds himself caught between protecting the girl he's always known, and confronting the woman standing in-front of him.
Some things are better left unsaid.
Some feelings are better left untouched.
And some mistakes are impossible to take back.
