There are some people who seem destined for greatness. There are others who seem stuck on the path of failure. For most of her life, Annalise Song felt as if she was the unhappy median between the two: bound to be nothing more than mediocre and solitary. Her mother died when she was a young child, leaving her already unaffectionate father to become a vacant workaholic. With only herself as actual company for days at a time, one day she dreamed up her escape from the world, which took the form of a little boy. At least, she assumed she imagined him. When he returned eleven years later, however, that assumption proved far less feasible. The mystery of John Smith - the boy who fell from the sky in a blue box - consumed her for over a decade, and though she never received answers, her drive to uncover the truth went undeterred. At the age of twenty-six, Annalise is chased into a world she never thought existed: one where monsters roam free, riddles are unsolvable, and nothing is as it seems. As she clings to the only thing she is certain of - the boy from the box who is now a man with no name -, she must fight against everything she has ever known and relearn answers to the questions residing at the center of the universe. There are secrets much bigger than what hides underneath bedskirts and within the shadows in corners. Two of those are the very people who endeavor to reveal them: the eccentric spaceman and the girl who should never have existed.
