Verena's Letter Back Home

Fourteen-year-old German-Jew Verena, had temporarily moved to America when she was eleven years old literally just before the time of the Civil War. She had to leave her family and friends behind, so she could come to America to work as an indentured servant to make money that she can bring back home, to Germany in about three to ten years. Until one day, at age fourteen, she was just about to leave for home, a war broke out over land. Abraham Lincoln didn't intend to free the slaves, his original intention was to have the South join back in with the Union. Will Verena be able to make it home safely? Or, will she have to stay in America, and be sold as a slave? Did she just make the biggest mistake of her life, or is it what her grandmother has always been telling her?
