Wincing, I allowed myself to collect my breath and allow the pain to ease. I hadn't even noticed the low, cackling laugh that was echoing through the room. I lifted my head and squinted just enough to make out the outline of features on the man's face. I didn't say anything. I wasn't prepared to give this maniac the satisfaction of seeing my fear or asking obvious, nervous questions. So instead, I waited for him to make the first move. To my delight, he did.
